About
The works explores the history of colonization and the dichotomy between whiteness and "other" through embracing simple methods of crafting the environment in a way that emphasizes the primitive qualities of the materials, while incorporating "traditional" methods of painting. To combine the two approaches is to fight the loss of histories and cultures which are often rooted in our reverence for the earth, not just the refinement of it. Many of the pieces are inspired by open use archival photographs taken of the African Diaspora. The work highlights the complexities and sustainability of a relationship broken by colonization and addresses the architecture of racism by challenging the presumption that living with the environment is uncivilized.
